People say marriage is hard, and I won’t pretend otherwise. Marriage mixes two lives. Beyond commitment, it’s an ongoing love battle that tests each person as a giver, negotiator and companion. Whether the issue is communication or an empty milk carton, these are seven marriage tips I can’t live without.
1. Kiss often
Kissing is underrated. It often becomes a quick peck before work or a prelude to something else, but kissing itself is powerful glue for passion and attachment. However often you kiss, do it more.
2. Create special rituals
Make traditions, not only time. Cook together every Monday, take a monthly road trip or create something together. Andrew and I spent afternoons making couples videos built around activities that revealed our similarities and, most importantly, helped us have fun.
3. Match your sleep schedules
Living together doesn’t automatically mean bonding. Bedtime creates room for cuddling, conversation and closeness. When possible, put down the screen, go to bed together and hold your spouse.
4. Choose your battles
We all have sore spots. I hate when laundry piles up, but I also know I didn’t marry my twin. Trying to change every little habit is exhausting and counterproductive. The goal is to unify your lives, not make them identical. Compromise on the small things so you have energy for the issues that truly matter.
5. Communicate calmly
A complaint should open a discussion, not launch an attack. Speak gently, avoid yelling and focus on finding a solution. Skip the silent treatment, indirect punishment and sarcasm. Starting with “I feel” instead of “you always” makes it easier for a spouse to hear the concern without feeling personally attacked.
6. Forget gender roles
Cooking, cleaning, earning and supporting one another shouldn’t be restricted by gender. Both partners deserve a comfortable home and the freedom to reach their potential. If one person isn’t pulling their weight, the answer is greater selflessness—not an outdated job description.
7. Be spontaneous
Too much routine becomes stale. A salsa bar, drive-in movie or unexpected gift can restore a sense of novelty and passion. Spontaneous moments help clear away the stress of bills and work so you can remember why you fell in love.
I live by these tips because health and happiness matter most—and both need to be nurtured intentionally.
